Fingerprinting and Volunteer Requirements FAQs 

HSD welcomes students' families or caregivers, and members of our local community, to volunteer. All volunteers working on the school grounds must have their fingerprint results on file with the Hollister School District.

Summary of the process for being cleared for volunteering:

  1. Communicate with your teacher about your interests, your duties, and the terms of your volunteering.

  2. Read this FAQ completely.

  3. Complete the Hollister Volunteer Request Applicant Form. Each person requesting clearance will need to complete the form separately.

  4. Collect a “Request for Livescan Service” from the Parent Resource Kiosk or office staff to take to the Livescan processor.

  5. Scan your fingerprints with the Livescan processor

  6. Your results will automatically be shared with the district once clearance is determined. Results will be logged in the student information system for school sites to access.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

Fingerprinting results must be on file for volunteers who are:

• Ongoing: Volunteering at the school regularly in any capacity

• At school: Volunteering on school grounds or in the classroom

• Face-to-face: Volunteering with direct contact with children

• Alone: Volunteering as the sole adult with children, unsupervised with children (i.e., during a field trip)

• School-sponsored trips: Athletics, band, field trips, science camp, etc.

Sample requirements:

NOT REQUIRING  Fingerprinting

• A volunteer bringing classroom items to the school. 

• A volunteer completing classroom jobs at home and returning them to the teacher. 

• A volunteer coordinating a class event.

• Coordinating Scholastic book orders (collecting orders and entering them into the Scholastic website)

REQUIRING Fingerprinting

• A volunteer helping in the classroom.

• A volunteer working on the school grounds while students are present. 

• A chaperone for a field trip.

• A volunteer for class events. 

1. WHY DOES THE SCHOOL REQUIRE THAT VOLUNTEERS BE FINGERPRINTED? The purpose of the criminal background check is to ensure that a person is permitted by law to participate in a school setting as a volunteer or employee. The California Education Code, Health and Safety Code, and Penal Code sections determine which offenses are or are not permitted. Fingerprinting is the most accurate way to collect this information.

 

2. WHERE DO I GO FOR FINGERPRINTING? Fingerprinting can be done at the Mariposa Tax and Business Service, 411 San Benito St, Hollister. Please call 831-636-5210 to confirm business days and hours.

3. WHAT DO I NEED FOR A LIVE SCAN/FINGERPRINTING? Fingerprinting agencies require a completed “Request for Livescan Service” form. This form must be generated by the Hollister School District. To obtain a completed “Request for Livescan Service” form, you must first complete the  Hollister Volunteer Request Applicant Form at any district or school kiosk. The scanning requires a valid form of identification.

Acceptable primary forms of identification are:

• California Driver’s License

• California Identification Card

• Out-of-state Driver’s License

4. HOW MUCH DOES FINGERPRINTING COST? The fee for this service is approximately $80. For volunteers whose student meets the UPP criteria, a limited number of district or school-sponsored vouchers may be available. Fees are due when you are fingerprinted. All forms of payment are accepted.

5. WHAT IS A LIVE SCAN? Live Scan is a method for capturing inkless fingerprints, which are digitized and transmitted directly to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The agencies check the fingerprints against any known criminal history records. A response (with or without a criminal history) is then sent to the agency requesting the Live Scan. *ANY and ALL criminal history (including sealed or expunged events) will be shared with the requesting district and can affect your clearance determination (see the sample table below). 

6. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE THE DISTRICT TO GET MY LIVE SCAN RESULTS?

In most cases, the results from the DOJ come back within 1-2 weeks. Due to various reasons, results can be delayed.  

7. HOW LONG ARE MY FINGERPRINT RESULTS VALID? As long as you volunteer in HSD Schools. Once your Fingerprints are cleared, your clearance will be indicated in the student information system under your related student(s). Upon entering the school office, you will be asked to scan your ID to obtain your dated sticker badge. This badge should be worn while on school grounds or a school-sponsored trip as a volunteer.  

8. WHAT IF I HAVE PROVIDED FINGERPRINTS TO OTHER EMPLOYERS OR AGENCIES? IS IT POSSIBLE  FOR MY NEW EMPLOYER OR AGENCY TO USE THE RESULTS OF PREVIOUSLY TAKEN PRINTS? Each applicant must be fingerprinted every time they apply with another agency.  Previous criminal history information provided to an applicant’s current or most recent employer or agency is confidential and cannot be shared with other agencies. This means that you must submit a new application each time a criminal history is requested of you. Therefore, you must go through the Live Scan process again.

9. WILL MY FINGERPRINTS BE PASSED TO IMMIGRATION OR ANY OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCY? No. Live Scans only go to the DOJ agency to verify criminal records. HSD is not interested in an applicant's immigration status. Your fingerprints are cleared by the Department of Justice; beyond that, your fingerprints will not be used for any purpose other than to make sure you are safe to work with children. This information will not be shared with immigration or any other agency.

10. WHAT IF I HAVE SOMETHING ON MY CRIMINAL RECORD, CAN I STILL VOLUNTEER? See sections 44010, 44011, 44346.1, and 44424 of the California Education Code. If the violation committed matches any of the criminal sections, the applicant will be limited or denied the opportunity to volunteer. Not everyone with an offense on their record is excluded from volunteering. Each situation is handled confidentially on a case-by-case basis.

11. IF MY FINGERPRINTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED, WHAT HAPPENS? Fingerprints are sometimes rejected for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is that the applicant's fingerprints have characteristics that are difficult to capture in the Live Scan process. These would include items such as cuts, scars, and calluses. If an applicant's fingerprints were rejected on this basis and were originally scanned by our agency, we will rescan them at no additional charge.

13. AGREEMENTS I understand that I am not entering into an employment relationship with the District and that I am not entitled to receive a salary or any employee benefits including workers’  compensation. I understand that either the District or I may terminate this volunteer relationship at any time without notice. In the course of volunteering for Hollister School District, I may be dealing with confidential information and I agree to keep said information in the strictest confidence.

I certify that I have not been convicted of a felony that would disqualify me from serving as a district volunteer. I am not required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Penal Code Section 290.  

I understand that if I volunteer as a driver, additional verification will be required. I have reviewed and agree to comply with the Child Abuse Prevention Reporting guidelines and Sexual Harassment policies contained in the Student and  Parent handbook and/or the District’s website.

• Un voluntario coordinando un evento de clase.

• Coordinar pedidos de libros de Scholastic (recoger pedidos) e ingresarlos en el sitio web de Scholastic)

REQUIRIENDO Toma de huellas dactilares

• Un voluntario ayudando en el aula.

1.¿POR QUÉ LA ESCUELA REQUIERE QUE HAYA VOLUNTARIOS? ¿HUELLAS DACTILARES? 3.¿QUÉ NECESITO PARA UN ESCANEO EN VIVO/TOMA DE HUELLAS DACTILARES? Toma de huellas dactilaresagenciaiesrequiere una “Solicitud de servicio Livescan” completa" forma. 4.¿CUÁNTO CUESTA LA TOMA DE HUELLAS DACTILARES? ElLa tarifa por este servicio es de aproximadamente $80. 8.¿QUÉ PASA SI HE PROPORCIONADO HUELLAS DACTILARES A OTROS EMPLEADORES O AGENCIAS??¿ES POSIBLE QUE MI NUEVO EMPLEADOR O AGENCIA UTILICE LOS RESULTADOS DE IMPRESIONES TOMADAS ANTERIORMENTE? YA cada solicitante se le deben tomar las huellas dactilares cada vez que presenta una solicitud.con otra agencia. Información de antecedentes penales previa proporcionada al empleador actual o más reciente del solicitante o La información de la agencia es confidencial y no se puede compartir con otrasagenciasEsto significa que debe presentar una nueva solicitud cada vez que se le soliciten antecedentes penales.. Por lo tanto,debes pasar por el proceso de Live Scan nuevamente.

9.¿MIS HUELLAS DACTILARES SE PASARÁN A INMIGRACIÓN O A CUALQUIER OTRA AGENCIA GUBERNAMENTAL? 10.¿QUÉ PASA SI TENGO ALGO EN MIS ANTECEDENTES PENALES? ¿PUEDO AÚN SER VOLUNTARIO? Véanse las secciones 44010, 44011, 44346.1,y 44424 del Código de Educación de California. 11.SI MIS HUELLAS DACTILARES NO SON ACEPTADAS, ¿QUÉ PASA? Las huellas dactilares sonA veces se rechazan por diversas razones. La más común es que las huellas dactilares del solicitante presentan características difíciles de capturar en el proceso de Live Scan. Estas incluyen cortes, cicatrices y callos. Si las huellas dactilares de un solicitante fueron rechazadas por este motivo y fueron escaneadas originalmente por nuestra agencia, las volveremos a escanear sin costo adicional.cargar.

13.ACUERDOS Entiendo que no estoy estableciendo una relación laboral con el Distrito y que no tengo derecho a recibir salario ni prestaciones laborales, incluida la compensación laboral. Entiendo que tanto el Distrito como yo podemos rescindir esta relación de voluntariado en cualquier momento sin previo aviso. Durante mi voluntariado en el Distrito Escolar de Hollister, es posible que maneje información confidencial y me comprometo a mantener dicha información en la más estricta confidencialidad.

Certifico que no he sido condenado por ningún delito grave que me inhabilite para servir como voluntario del distrito. No estoy obligado a registrarme como delincuente sexual según el artículo 290 del Código Penal.

Entiendo que si me ofrezco como conductor voluntario, se requerirá verificación adicional. He revisado y acepto cumplir con las directrices para la prevención del abuso infantil y las políticas sobre acoso sexual que se encuentran en el Manual para estudiantes y padres o en el sitio web del Distrito.
